Replication can serve several purposes in database information management:

  1. Replication can provide a backup of specified table data in the event of problems with the primary database.
  2. If the site is dual active, and one system becomes unavailable, the remaining system can automatically take over database operations. The data on the systems will have been automatically synchronized via replication.
  3. When implemented between SQL Server and databases from other vendors, data can be migrated from one system to the other, making data accessible across the different environments.
